This beautiful housecoat was made by one of my lovely customers, Mia — what an inspiring example!
She writes:
“””The fabric took me around 14 weeks to create by hand, sewing over 2,000 hexagon patches. Once the fabric was ready, it only took 3 hours to sew the garment together.
The main cost was the pattern itself — most of the fabric was Liberty of London scraps gifted by fellow sewing group members, along with fabric I had left from making scrubs during Covid. The lining is an old sheet, and I spent about £20 on wadding. The buttons are original 1940s.
I made it for a ‘Dig for Victory’ event, where we showcased handmade ‘make do and mend’ garments. My design was inspired by a WWII dressing gown held at the Wessex Museum, including a recreated ‘German parachute patch’ on the back, made with donated silk.
The pattern was simple to follow, easy to adjust, and included brilliant tips for sewing historical garments. The finished piece is remarkably close to the original housecoat that inspired it.”””
